The Great Rift Valley which extends from Middle East to Mozambique passes in the north- south direction right through Ethiopia. This shearing of the earth’s surface occurred at the same time that the Arabian Peninsula split from the rest of Africa .Volcanic activity which has continued until today finds expression in volcanoes in Ethiopia’s Danakil Depression, as well as in the hot springs in many parts of the country .
The Dallol craters are the lowest known volcanic vents in the earth (in some areas it is more than 116 meters below sea level), which is not covered by water. In the area, there are hot yellow sulfur fields among the sparkling white salt beds. In the area temperature is extremely hot and the daily temperature soars to 48degree Celsius, in addition frequent earth tremors and several active volcanoes are typical expressions of Dallol depression.
Erta ‘ale and Dallol depression are becoming hot tourism destinations in Ethiopia, and from time to time these attractions are getting wider global electronics and print media coverage from famous enterprises, such as BBC, CNN, the Guardian news paper , etc . Day1. Transfer and Addis Ababa sightseeing tour
Arrive Addis Ababa Bole international airport and transfer to hotel. Depending on your arrival time make Addis Ababa city tour including the National Museum, which is home to the fossilized hominid (Lucy), the Ethnological Museum, which was the former palace of Haile Selassie and then continue on to Holy Trinity Cathedral Orthodox Church. Overnight in Hotel
Day2. Drive to Awash
Morning drive 230km South to Awash National park, the nearest game park to Addis Ababa, through Debrezeit and Nazareth towns. After lunch break, drive to the park and explore the Awash National park and spot different wild life including Beisa Oryx, Lesser Kudu, Hammadryas Baboon, Vervet Monkey, Dik-dik, endemic hartebeest and more. Overnight in Lodge
Day3. Drive to Semera
Morning after breakfast drive to Semera where there is pronounced Afar people settlement and also seat for regional Afar state. Enroute visit the beautiful Afar people and their villages, and Camel Caravan. Overnight in Local Hotel/Camping
Day4. Drive to Afdera
Early morning drive to Afdera to visit the salt lake and salt extraction area, which lies 100 meter below sea level and the lowest point on the earth. Overnight Local hotel/Camping.
Day5. Drive to Erta Ale.
Early morning drive to kusrewad where we arrange the camel to ascend our logistics and pick Local militia and guide. Late afternoon start walking to Erta Ale and after 3 hours climb to Erta Ale volcano mountain and lava lake , which is 613 meters tall and the longest existing lava lake, present since the early years of the twentieth century. Overnight camping on the Summit.
Day6. Drive to Ahmedella
Early morning, about 4:00, start walking back to mountain base (our camping base) to meet our travel staffs. This day you will drive through the most inhospitable weather and challenging sandy road. Then, after breakfast, drive to Ahemedella and enjoy the very long caravans who are passing by with their camel carrying salt. Overnight Camping
Day7. Ahmedela – Dallol – Ahmedela
Morning drive to the salty lake (Lake Asale) and visit the salt workers, the merchant, the salt market and the lake. Then proceed 17 km to Dallol and enjoy the spectacular view and small hill which is colorful by hot spring in several places. The hot spring outpours with the sulfurs, potash and salt which forms spectacular formation. Then drive back to Ahmedela. Overnight camping at Ahmedela
Day8. Drive to Mekele
Morning drive to Mekele via the town of Berhale in the River bed and ascend all the way to the Tigrian highland with the camel caravans, with brief photo stop over the depression. Overnight Mekelle in hotel
Day9. Fly back to Addis Ababa
Morning transfer to the air port and fly back to Addis Ababa. After lunch break souvenir shopping, participate in farewell dinner at famous Ethiopian traditional restaurant and evening departure.
