Awassa is one of the fast growing week end holiday and conference town located at 280 km south of Addis Ababa and capital of the Southern Nations Nationalities Region. Lake Awassa with its mountainous background is one of Ethiopia’s most beautiful lakes and is home to a huge population of birds, and walking along the shores one can also see hippo. In addition, Colobus and Vervet Monkeys and Baboons are common in the hotel grounds around the lake. The journey to Awassa takes about 4 hours.
Day 1: Early in the morning drive south wards down the Rift Valley, passing through Debrezeit, and by the lakes of Koka, Ziway, Langano, Abijata / Shalla and Shashemene. After check into the hotel and lunch break, in the afternoon boats can be hired on the lake and it is great to spend afternoon, among the fishermen and watching different water birds including he king fisher .
In Awassa there are many new hotels including new Haile Resort (owned by the famous runner, Haile Gebreselassie), situated on the shores of the lake and Lewi resort ,South star international ,Gezahegne Resort ,etc. Most of these hotels have a swimming pool or visitors may like to walk along the shores of the lake or in the nearby forest. Lunch and dinner will be in the hotel.
Day 2: Bird watchers may like to take an early morning trip to the vibrant fish market, and watch a variety of species. Otherwise you will spend the morning relaxing in the hotel grounds, along the shores of the lake or on a boat. After lunch drive back to Addis Ababa.
